Great points Robert. I spend a lot of time in things I think I have to do -- putting together email campaigns, soliciting for support, trying to identify the right audiences, etc. -- that I often limit the time available for the primary task at hand: the writing.

my experience is if you dont start writing you wont get a manuscript. get a first draft done. that will tell you what research you need to do and will make it easier to get funding as you'll have something. the first draft doesnt haver to be perfect it just has to be done. that's why you're going to hire an editor-your first need for funds.
start writing-3 pages a day a thousand page ms at the end of the year. dont worry about style or perfection or spelling just get down what you want to say.research is fun writing is hard work. reward yourself for the hardwork of writing by the fun of researching

Putting on my freelance editor hat to address this: perhaps the issue isn't that the publications you've pitched aren't interested. Maybe they are. But if it's a huge issue, and they have XX news hole for a story on it, they might only be able to address a sliver of the entire issue. If you're really interested in this subject, think of it as a beat, with multiple stories that you could tell. Slice off the stories and pitch a lot of them to different publications. In the past I've had editors tell me that my query wasn't a story, it was an idea. Ideas are good, but they're often to big and nebulous. If it would help, think in terms of turning the idea into a story: who would you talk to, what other research would you do? You could have a working hypothesis that you could tweak as you go. A totally different way to approach this: find some trade magazines that cover this industry (an independent one) -- they might be interested in a series of stories that get into the nitty gritty of the issue.

I've been in similar situations over the years, trying to sell the value of exploratory data analysis and empirical modeling. It's the old story of "there's stuff you know, stuff you know that you don't know, and stuff that you don't know that you don't know." ;-)

I'm guessing the editor had / has a preconceived opinion on the subject and wasn't interested in the possibility of it being overturned by detailed investigation. If I'm reading your hint correctly, there are numerous strong opinions on the subject floating around and lots of dollars at stake.

Thank you Robert. I hope so as well. Fortunately, I know it's an amazing story (and keep discovering more elements about it that suck me in) so I'm confident plenty of people will be interested.

Of course, Laura. I will be in touch. For others' reference I'm happy for you to pay by check. I do feel comfortable with WePay as a secure alternative to PayPal (especially because they avoid some of the problems with frozen accounts PayPal users have encountered in recent years), but I do understand if people prefer other options such as paying by check. For anyone who'd like to contact me directly you can email bill [at] lascheratlarge [dot] com.
